After some much needed research and going through the readings for this module, I have come to learn that metadata is not some scary coding term like I originally thought, it is, as Itza Carbajal and Michelle Caswell put it, data about data. Overall, I think metadata is highly important in many professions, but in regards to digital humanities, it is extremely important as there is so much information regarding images, artifacts, videos, etc. that would not be highlighted without the use of metadata. Using Trophy helped me realize 1. how simple filling out metadata is and 2. what information is regarded as metadata that is also important such as the creator and where specifically items were located and found. When incorporating said information into Omeka, I must admit I was a little nervous by using the plugins and even when we got to the portion that looked like coding. Technology has never been my strong suit but I am happy to say I learned a lot during this module. With that said, when the cvs file was uploaded to Omeka, I had the opportunity to incorporate more metadata and think about the items differently. This is when the physical dimensions like weight and height came into play. One example I use in my Digitizing My Kitchen exhibit was a 1 gallon cactus shaped drink dispenser. The metadata asked me to discuss the physical dimensions, but then I thought how they change depending on if the dispenser is filled or not (this is regarding to the weight) so I added metadata for both. To circle back, I do think all metadata is important to digital humanities, but more specifically I think knowing the sources, creator, and where the items were found would be among the most vital for the purposes of DH.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prior to module 6, I truly had no idea what metadata was or why it would be important in the first place.
